Chapter Sixteen
âYou sure do make a statement with those black boots.â Warp chuckled.
Quill gave a wry grin. âAnd what statement do you think I am making?â
âThat youâre a rebel.â The older man clapped him on the shoulder as they walked shoulder to shoulder across the training grounds. He wasnât reprimanding Quill this time. In fact, he seemed to be in a cheerful mood. He was grinning to himself as he strode confidently over the hard-packed dirt, the bright sunlight giving his white hair a greenish tint. The scars on his face seemed especially prominent in the natural light.
âThe only thing Iâm rebelling against is the higher-upsâ idea of fashion. All white is an eye-sore.â
âThey just want to make their own statement. A beacon of light in the community and all that. It is rather dull to look at all the time, Iâll grant you. Thatâs why I let it slide with you, son. Wear your boots and kick some ass with them.â
Warp nodded towards a trio of new agents who scurried by whispering âCaptainâ reverently. Quill wanted to roll his eyes. Everyone here thought he had his head so far up Warpâs ass that he couldnât take a shit without the guyâs approval, but these new kids were the true ass-kissers. Always looking for a way to impress his mentor. Always falling all over each other to please him.
I was like that once. I suppose I still want his approval. I certainly hate disappointing him. But, Iâve grown into my own, havenât I?
Or had he? He still felt wrong bending the rules or not reporting something to Warp. Warpâs imminent displeasure was like a dark cloud hovering in the back of his mind. Despite his protests to Vance, his mentor had been like a father to him: raising him and training him to become a Sentinel. Standing up for him to the higher-ups whenever Quill didnât meet their approval.
But now, Quill was starting to see things differently. He knew only what Warp had told him. He had never seen the captain go to bat for him. He had never heard the man argue a case in his favor in person. Quill had never asked Warp for permission to wear his black boots, but Warp had insisted on more than one occasion that he had approved it and it was fine. If it was approved, why bring it up from time to time? Why continue to make Quill feel like he owed the man for sticking up for him?
âThey just turn you off between your little assignments, huh? You need to open your eyes to the real world, kid.â
Red Ravenâs words echoed in his head. Was he truly blind to the world around him? Was he far too trusting of his superiors? Or was Red Raven merely a madman who wanted to cause discord in the ranks? If he was, if everything he said was a lie, then why was Quill feeling more and more uneasy around Warp lately? Why was his brain so conflicted?
Quill pushed these thoughts away and concentrated on his job.
